TRO Expires, kat.ph is live

The 72-hour Temporary Restraining Order issued by the Philippine Intelectual Property Office expired last night. The domain kat.ph has been removed from the suspended list and is now active again.

IPO Orders Takedown of kat.ph

The Philippine Intellectual Property Office (www.ipophil.gov.ph) recently issued a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) directing dotPH to suspend the domain kat.ph for a period of 72 hours.

The TRO, signed by Atty. Marlita Dagsa of the IPO Bureau of Legal Affairs, was issued because of a complaint filed with the IPO by the Philippine Association of the Recording Industry and some of its members. The complaint alleges that the registrant of kat.ph is violating intellectual property rights by making copyrighted music available for download to its users.

dotPH was initially contacted by the complainants' lawyers in December of 2011 with a demand to take down the domain, and dotPH agreed to cooperate if provided with an order from a court or appropriate authority. dotPH received the TRO earlier this week and subsequently suspended kat.ph in compliance with IPO's directive.

PH Domain Redirected to Competitor's Site

On December 1, 2012, the site of Sulit.com.ph, a Philippine online marketplace, was temporarily redirected to point to the website of one of it's competitors.

We're currently performing an extensive security check to verify the integrity of our system and to date no vulnerabilities have been found. Updates will follow as new information comes in.

In the meantime, we're putting in place added measures to address our domain owners' concerns. They can now choose to lock their accounts so that changes to domain's DNS records will NOT be allowed online. Changes will only be allowed once we receive written confirmation from the domain owner. If you own a domain and want to have this feature implemented, please email or call 637-2104 to 05.

dotPH Wins Online Libel Case

The long ordeal is finally over. In a decision released last October 17, RTC Judge Danilo Buemio dismissed the libel case filed against dotPH by Joel Aquino and Versomina Inc.

It started back in 2008 when a blogger on dotPH's i.ph blogging service wrote several posts warning web designers to stay away from a web design firm called Versomina Inc., also operating under the names Stratvisions, Netpros, Webcomm, Team Creatives, MyTuscany and others. The blogger cited questionable employment practices and oppressive working conditions as reasons for avoiding these companies.

PH domain sells for P700,000.00

The after-market for PH domains is growing! Earlier this month, the domain oom.ph was sold to a foreign client for a whopping P700,000.00!

The sale price dwarfs the amount paid for weather.com.ph, which last year sold for P120,000.00 to a Philippine buyer. Both domains were sold as is – no content, Ad Sense or income generating accounts included. Generally, domains that have content and a proven history of visitor traffic sell for much more.

It's Official: The Philippines is Now PH

For the longest time, the Philippines has been known by the initials “RP,” for “Republic of the Philippines.”

However, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) will now be using the initials “PH” when referring to the Philippines. This is good news for anyone who has registered a .PH domain, since the initials PH will be getting more exposure and becomes more closely identified with the Philippines.

The DFA believes that the use of the ISO-designated country code PH will lessen confusion since RP also refers to the Republics of Poland, Portugal Panama, Paraguay and Peru.
